Gyms are a great place for people to pursue a healthier lifestyle. Even though gyms are designed to improve your health, injuries can happen. Whether you’re back at the gym because of a New Year’s resolution or a gym rat who has been going for years, injuries can happen. In fact, nearly half a million people were injured while using exercise equipment in 2012, and gyms have only become more popular since then. The Waiver & Injuries
If you have a gym membership, or even use a guest pass, it is important to read the liability waiver. The waiver will attempt to block every possibility of an injury claim. The language used in these waivers is often deliberately broad and hard to understand. However, each gyms waiver is different, and you may still have a claim. For example, a gym can be liable for injuries caused by equipment malfunction or improper maintenance
To avoid injury, it is important to follow some simple safety rules. First, know your limits. Never be afraid to ask another gym member for assistance. Second, always check the equipment you’re using for warnings and make sure you are using the equipment correctly. Also, if you notice that maintenance is needed on any equipment, be sure to report it. If your gym is maintaining its equipment, simply switch gyms. Even simple precautions during your workouts can prevent you from the most common major injuries.
What To Do If You Are Injured
If you are injured, the first thing you should do is file a report with the gym. Be sure to ask any witnesses to provide a statement as well. If you are injured because of broken equipment or poor maintenance, be sure to take photos of the equipment. Most importantly, go see a doctor if you are injured. Lastly, contact an attorney.
